President Donald Trump highlighted a major upcoming event for Christianity in the nation’s capital next month.
Trump hosted an Easter brunch with several faith leaders on Wednesday, the middle of Holy Week. Trump said Good Friday marks the death of Jesus Christ, followed by the “miracle” of Jesus’s resurrection on Easter Sunday.
“And May 17, I’m inviting every American to the National Mall for a day of prayer and praise and thanksgiving,” Trump said, drawing applause from attendees. “And as we approach America’s 250th anniversary, it’s going to be something really special.”
Trump previously highlighted this event, Rededicate 250, at the National Prayer Breakfast in February, inviting attendees to “rededicate themselves as ‘one nation under God.’”
Rededicate 250 is on the 250th anniversary of May 17, 1776, a day the Continental Congress dedicated to “fasting, humiliation and prayer,” which then-General George Washington recognized. Washington later assigned Nov. 26 to be a day of public thanksgiving and prayer in 1789, when he was serving as president.
The event on May 17 will be held on the National Mall from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Participating organizations include: Samaritan’s Purse, CatholicVote, Concerned Women for America, and Hallow.

Rededicate 250 is one of multiple events the U.S. is hosting for its landmark 250th anniversary. The National Mall is also hosting the Great American State Fair from June 26 through July 10, as well as the annual fireworks display on July 4.
Other events tied to the nation’s milestone anniversary include the grand opening of the Teddy Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota, and an IndyCar race in Washington, D.C., from Aug. 22 through Aug. 23.
The White House directed the Washington Examiner to the president’s comments at the Easter brunch when asked for additional comment.
