Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown pushed back on comments former President Donald Trump made about an alleged helicopter ride the two shared and his relationship with Vice President Kamala Harris.

During a Mar-a-Lago press conference on Thursday that lasted over an hour, Trump covered a host of topics. Among them was an anecdote about Brown that the California Democrat says never happened.

“I went down in a helicopter with him. We thought maybe this was the end,” Trump said. “We were in a helicopter going to a certain location together, and there was an emergency landing. This was not a pleasant landing.”

Brown responded to the comments later on Thursday, telling the San Francisco Chronicle, “I’ve never been on a helicopter with Trump.”

The California Democrat, who served as San Fransciso’s mayor from 1996 to 2004, did write in 2013 that he received a ride on Trump’s plane. At the time, Brown called the former president “a friend of mine” as he remembered how Trump had flown him up so they could have lunch together.

Brown also responded to Trump’s comments that the former mayor had told him “terrible things” about Harris, with whom he dated in 1994 and 1995 when she was a prosecutor in Alameda County.

The former mayor appointed Harris to two state commissions, leading a reporter on Thursday to ask Trump if he thought the relationship had a role in jumpstarting Harris’s career and putting her on the path to the White House.

“I mean I haven’t seen him in years,  but he told me terrible things about her,” Trump replied as he commented on Harris’s and Brown’s relationship. “Maybe he’s changed his tune but he was not a fan of hers very much at that point.”

However, Brown told the outlet “I wouldn’t say anything bad about any woman to him.”

“I would know better. It might encourage him to take a (verbal) shot,” the former mayor said.
