Washington Examiner White House reporter Naomi Lim said President Donald Trump’s ban on more media outlets from the White House appeared to be a “shoot from the hip” announcement.
“It was actually really lovely to be a part of this press pool,” Lim said on NewsNation’s The Hill Sunday with Chris Stirewalt on Sunday. “We have to keep needling him because the issue is that I don’t think that they actually quite understood what this ban was.”
Trump announced on Friday that he was banning CNN, MS Now, and Politico from the White House, calling them “fake news” in a Truth Social post. He alluded that more outlets could be on the chopping block, writing, “Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow.”
Lim was in the Oval Office with other reporters trying to get clarification.
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico (The recipients of an illegal and ridiculous $8 Million Dollar subscription, an All Time Record, directly from the United States Government, under Crooked Joe Biden, in order to keep them ‘alive.’ Seems like corruption to me!), from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” the president wrote.
“Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America. Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump said in the Truth Social post.
Lim said additional reporting showed that White House chief of staff Susie Wiles wasn’t present in the White House when the president made his announcement. However, the outlets named in the president’s ban were still present, Lim said.
“He announced it in real time,” Lim said. “The CNN and those other outlets were still on campus, but since then, their hard presses, their hard access cards, have been revoked.”
This wasn’t the first time Trump has sought to strip reporters’ credentials.
Last year, the president attempted to bar Associated Press reporters from pooling opportunities after the outlet didn’t swap using the Gulf of America to the Gulf of Mexico, after Trump’s executive order that issued the name change. The organization sued and received a partial win.
