Currently Venezuela is embroiled in a split government of Maduro and the US backed Guaido. US secretary of state Pompeo called of the world to disconnect from the Venezuelan banking system. Washington has signaled that it is ready to step up economic sanctions on Venezuela. Just a month or two ago Trump put sanctions on Turkey over a American hostage. This shows President Trumps willingness to use economic constraints on perceived enemies that other presidents just where unwilling to use.
On Saturday Britain, Germany, Spain, and France all stated that they would support Guaido. Venezuela currently has the support of Russia, Iran, China and Syria and some smaller nations.
