Senate Republicans on Thursday authorized a key committee chairman to issue a wide range of subpoenas as part of an investigation into the origins of the Russia probe and allegations of wrongdoing by top Obama administration officials.

The party-line vote in the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee represented a significant escalation of the GOP-led investigation, which has come at the urging of President Donald Trump and his allies. The Senate Judiciary Committee was scheduled to vote to authorize a similar subpoena, but the vote was postponed to next week as senators sought additional time to debate and offer amendments.
