While Democrats are going after Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and former President Donald Trump is slapping back at now-never-Trump Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the GOP is going to ultimately regain power, according to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
“What’s very striking is that President Trump still has such enormous reach in the party that nobody can fight him,” Gingrich told Sunday’s “The Cats Roundtable” on WABC 770 AM-N.Y. “You can complain about him. You can criticize him. But [Mitch] McConnell can’t possibly fight Trump. He doesn’t have a big enough base.
“It’s also a reminder that there is an establishment insider party that sits around at cocktail parties in Washington. And then there’s this huge country outside of Washington. That country in 2015, by about 2-1, did not like the Republican leadership in the Congress. That was the forerunner of us ending up with Trump as a presidential nominee. [Kevin] McCarthy has been much smarter as the House Republican leader to recognize his ability to get the extra seats [to win the House] rests almost entirely on working with Trump, not picking a fight with him.”
Meanwhile Democrats Gov. Gavin Newsom and Cuomo face crises in the two largest blue states, spoiling what was once a media love affair with Cuomo amid the reports of nursing home deaths.
“What’s really scary is that Gov. Cuomo actually believes all that stuff: He thinks he really is a romantic, happy, positive, good-looking guy – cheerful and pleasant,” Gingrich told host John Catsimatidis. “It’s a little bit like watching a bad remake of the Godfather. It’s very clear that the Cuomo administration made some major mistakes and then obstructed justice and covered up the mistakes. Lied about them in a way that 9,000 senior citizens died who didn’t have to die.”
And, moderate Americans are paying attention to President Joe Biden’s shaky start in his first weeks in office, including the vaccine distribution and struggles to open schools.
“We were told they would follow the science – that they were people who really believed in science – but then it turned out that the teachers union didn’t like what the Center for Disease Control was saying,” Gingrich said. “Then all of a sudden, they said, ‘Maybe we’re not totally going to follow the science.'”
Americans want to get vaccines and get back to school and the Biden administration is struggling to deliver, setting up a 2022 regain of power for Republicans in the House and Senate, Gingrich concluded.
