New Jersey Democrats have decided who they want to replace recently-deceased Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) on November’s ballot: Democratic state Sen. Nellie Pou.
Several high-profile state Democrats like Gov. Phil Murphy and the family of Pascrell had rallied around Pou to take his spot on the ballot after his death on Aug. 21.
Pou has extensive state legislative experience having served in the New Jersey Legislature since 1997 and will likely win in New Jersey’s 9th congressional district, a deep-blue district. If elected, she’ll be the first Hispanic American woman elected to Congress in New Jersey.
“I’m excited about today but even more excited about tomorrow and all the tomorrows that will follow as we unite to show the residents of our district what is possible when we fight together,” Pou said in her acceptance speech. “And fight together we must.”
A crowd of Democrats had vied for Pascrell’s seat, but Pou received the majority of support within the state party. On Monday, the three county Democratic chairs in NJ-9 endorsed Pou.
“Nellie Pou is the ideal public servant to succeed Rep. Pascrell and continue his life’s mission of building a stronger, fairer, and more inclusive New Jersey,” Murphy said in a statement.
Pou admired Pascrell, she said in her acceptance speech.

“As I reflect on Congressman Pascrell’s legacy, I am reminded of his unwavering commitment to the people of our district,” Pou said. “Bill was not just a legislator; he was a champion for the voiceless, a true fighter who never backed down, a tireless advocate for justice, and a mentor and friend to many, and to me.”
“Whether you say ‘let’s fight’ or ‘vamos a luchar,’ either way we move on to history and victory,” Pou said.
