Republican National Committee Co-Chairwoman Lara Trump contended Vice President Kamala Harris and the “coup” she conducted against President Joe Biden is “the real threat to democracy,” pushing back against claims her father-in-law is dangerous to the United States.
The daughter-in-law of former President Donald Trump was discussing his appearance at the Al Smith dinner last week on iHeart Radio’s The Breakfast Club, during which host Charlamagne tha God questioned why Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was laughing at Donald Trump’s jokes when he is one of several Democrats warning about how dangerous Donald Trump is to democracy. Lara Trump contended these claims could just be “all scare tactics” and proceeded to suggest that Harris is the one who poses a threat to democracy.
“What was a coup was when they replaced Joe Biden with Kamala Harris, who was not elected by anyone, to run for president,” Lara Trump said. “There are 14 million people who voted for Joe Biden to be the nominee for the Democrat Party, and if you want to talk about a real threat to democracy, I would argue that.”

Lara Trump’s claim was in reference to how Biden bowed out of his reelection bid back in July after multiple Democrats dismissed the idea of replacing him. Harris filled his spot as the party’s 2024 presidential nominee shortly after. Lara Trump added that people considered Kamala Harris as “the insurance policy for Joe Biden” due to her poor performance as vice president.
Charlamagne tha God, who identifies as an “unaffiliated” voter, was asked by Lara Trump if he would have picked Harris if the Democratic Party could not run Biden as its presidential nominee, to which the host answered “yes.” He explained that he had wanted Biden to step aside “for a very long time” and referenced how the president once claimed “there’s about 50 of us that could beat Donald Trump,” joking that the party should “line’em all up, then.”
Lara Trump’s discussion also encompassed border security and illegal immigration, specifically how it affects Yuma, Arizona, a city in close proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border. She explained that pregnant women can possibly be turned away from receiving care at a hospital “because of them having to take care of all the illegal migrants coming over” and instead will have to travel long distances to receive pregnancy care.
“And so, having gone and seen it with my own eyes, I’ll tell you the most infuriating part to me,” Lara Trump explained. “You have this border wall that Donald Trump built, and then laying down on the ground where you have a wide open section, are pieces of the border wall that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, because they campaigned and said ‘we will not build another foot of Donald Trump’s border wall,’ it’s laying on the ground, and there are people who come right through there. They could stand it up right now if they wanted to, but they won’t do it. That is very frustrating.”

Unlike previous elections, the Republican Party has pushed its supporters to partake in early voting, with Lara Trump contending that these voters are heeding their call.
