Kentucky Officers Station Outside Capitol, Will Offer ‘Drive-Thru’ Protesting

Protesters crowded the lawn at Kentucky’s Capitol on Wednesday.

The chanting was so loud, it nearly drowned out Gov. Andy Beshear doing his COVID-19 briefing.

Their message to the governor was that they want businesses back open. Beshear has not yet said when he plans to begin that process in the state.

Beshear responded during his briefing saying while he respects the right to protest, he did not condone the mass gathering, which goes against CDC guidelines.

On Thursday, the scene outside the press room looked a lot different. Kentucky State Police were stationed outside and a large part of the lawn was blocked off by police tape.

Health Commissioner Dr. Steven Stack said he asked KSP to provide an alternative option to help people demonstrate safely on Capitol grounds.

Stack said there will now be the option to drive-in or drive-thru on the top floor of the Capitol parking garage.

People will have to stay in their cars, in designated parking areas and follow CDC guidelines.

“These options allow people to use their voices and be heard while protecting the public health,” Stack said in a statement.

WLKY also observed workers sound-proofing the press room earlier in the day. We did not see any protesters.
