Vice President JD Vance will visit Greenland on Friday. He will join second lady Usha Vance and several other United States officials who were already in the European nation amid tensions with the United States as President Donald Trump seeks to take over the island.

“You know, there was so much excitement around Usha’s visit to Greenland this Friday that I decided that I didn’t want her to have all that fun by herself, and so I’m going to join her,” Vance said in a video post to X on Tuesday.

“I’m going to visit some of our guardians in the space force on the northwest coast of Greenland. And also just check out what’s going on with the security there of Greenland,” Vance continued.

National security adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright were part of the U.S. delegation that traveled with the second lady to Greenland, which made her the highest-ranking politician to travel to the nation.

However, Greenland’s prime minister blasted the visit from the second lady on Monday as an “aggressive” power move after Trump has repeatedly said he wants to acquire the island.

“A lot of other countries have threatened Greenland. Have threatened to use its territories and its waterways to threaten the United States, to threaten Canada, and, of course, to threaten the people of Greenland. So we’re gonna check out how things are going there,” said the vice president, alluding to Trump’s desires to make Greenland part of the U.S.

The vice president and second lady will visit the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, where they will receive a briefing on Arctic security matters and meet with U.S. service members.

The vice president’s visit will likely be viewed as a further escalation from Greenland and Danish authorities, who have opposed the sale of the island.

“And I say that speaking for President Trump, we want to reinvigorate the security of the people of Greenland because we think it’s important to protect the security of the entire world,” the vice president continued. “Unfortunately, leaders in both America and in Denmark, I think, ignored Greenland for far too long. That’s been bad for Greenland. It’s also been bad for the security of the entire world. We think we can take things in a different direction, so I’m gonna go check it out.”
