Prominent mourners at the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed revenge against President Donald Trump, including calls for his assassination.
Revenge was a major theme of the massive funeral — the ayatollah was himself assassinated in U.S.-Israel strikes — which was attended by hundreds of thousands, including nearly every senior Iranian official. At one point, Mohammad Rasouli, a poet who served as the master of ceremonies before the prayers, openly called for Trump’s assassination over the loudspeakers, according to the Associated Press.

“Why is the biggest bastard in the world still alive?” he asked, referring to Trump. “The world is no longer a good place” for Trump, he added to raucous cheers from the crowd.
He apparently wasn’t stopped by officials. Those in attendance included President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Quds Force leader Esmail Qaani, and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, widely believed to be the de facto ruler of Iran. The funeral was the second time Vahidi had been seen publicly since the war began, the other appearance being Thursday, and the first appearance of three of Khamenei’s sons, Masoud, Meysam, and Mostafa, since the war began.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei was notably absent, as expected. He hasn’t been seen or directly heard from since the Feb. 28 airstrike that killed his father and reportedly wounded him.
Other mourners who spoke with the Associated Press gave more explicit threats.
“I came here to shout and seek revenge,” Gholamreza Sabooni, a 29-year-old man who works in a grocery store, told the outlet. “They killed our imam; we should kill their leader, Trump.”
U.S. intelligence has warned of Iranian assassination attempts against Trump since 2020, when the first threats came following his assassination of charismatic Quds Force commander Gen. Qassem Soleimani.
Trump has continued issuing provocative comments of his own, touting Iran’s military rout in the war and floating the idea of killing everyone at the funeral.
“We knocked the hell out of Iran,” he said in a July 4 speech. “They’re dying to settle. We gave them a week off for a funeral because we’re nice people.”
“They are all there. One shot [and we can take them all out], but we are not going to do that because then we would have nobody to negotiate with,” Trump said in another comment.
However, Trump ceded to Axios that he was “shocked” at the turnout and outpourings of emotions at the funeral, though he suggested they could be “fake tears.”
