Three firefighters and 12 passengers were injured on Saturday morning after a train collided with a fire truck in Delray Beach, Florida.
At 10:45 a.m. ET, a Brightline high-speed passenger train struck a Delray Beach Fire Rescue truck that was out on an emergency call. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue responded to the incident, with the three firefighters transported to a local hospital all in stable condition, and the 12 passengers hospitalized with minor injuries.
An investigation into the cause of the collision is underway by the Delray Beach Police Department, Brightline officials, and the National Transportation Safety Board.
Footage and photos posted to X show shattered glass in the passenger train cars, a flipped fire truck with debris scattered across the tracks, and the front of the Brightline train with severe damage.
Brightline service was launched in South Florida in 2018, connecting cities such as Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. It expanded its line in 2022 to include Orlando, a city north of Miami and home to a variety of well-known theme parks.
This is not the first collision involving the high-speed train service. According to the Federal Railroad Administration, from September 2023 to June 2024, 34 people were killed by Brightline trains along the 235-mile route. Over one-third of those deaths occurred in Brevard County, just to the east of Orlando.
