Nine people are dead in Pennsylvania after a gunman opened fire Friday in Erie, Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) said Saturday.
Two children appeared to be among those killed in a mass shooting after witnesses reported seeing a man firing a gun before he entered a home on Perry Street around 5 p.m. on Friday. Two women were shot on the street outside the home, and more victims were found dead inside the residence, according to CBS News, with police saying the suspect was also found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Eight were killed, with the death count rising to nine when accounting for the shooter.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah described the episode as the worst he had encountered in nearly three decades in law enforcement. Authorities said all shots were fired before police arrived on the scene, and indicated an ongoing investigation is probing for a motive. Officials are providing an update on the incident in a press conference at 4 p.m.
“The loss of life is devastating, and the circumstances we are working through are deeply disturbing,” Lorah said, according to Fox8.
Shapiro weighed in on the “tragic mass shooting” in a statement Saturday morning. “We will not speculate about a motive, or at least information that could compromise this investigation,” he added.
He said he had spoken to Erie Mayor Daria Devlin about the incident and “offered my Administration’s full support.”

“My heart breaks for this family. Lori and I are praying for their loved ones and the entire Erie community.”
“There are no words that can adequately express the magnitude of the loss of life here,” Lora said. “Out of respect for the victims and their loved ones, I will not discuss the specific details of what our officers encountered today. Our investigators are working diligently as we speak to establish the full circumstances of what occurred. We will not speculate about a motive or any information that could compromise this investigation.”
