Inside Out: 2 had the highest-grossing opening weekend so far this year when it earned $155 million during its opening North American weekend.

Including its international releases, Disney and Pixar’s latest film made $295 million this weekend. This makes it the second highest-grossing animated film of all time, domestically, behind another sequel from the company, Incredibles 2 in 2018, which rolled in over $182 million.

The first iteration of the film made $90.5 million domestically in 2015. Inside Out subsequently won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year. It is Disney’s sixth film to become a franchise.

This marks a change of pace for Disney, as its last animated film Wish only made $31.7 million in its opening over last year’s five-day Thanksgiving weekend. The original film surrounded a magical kingdom that granted the wish of one subject every year and was meant to commemorate Disney’s 100th anniversary.

Earlier this year, Pixar Animation Studios announced layoffs for about 14% of its workforce, roughly 175 employees. Likely these were some of the same people that worked on the film, as production began last year.

Pixar has now had three theatrical releases since the coronavirus pandemic. From 2020 to 2022, three of its films went straight to streaming service Disney+.
