Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., was rushed to Johns Hopkins after suffering a stroke Saturday while attending his son's hockey game, his chief of staff says.

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., was hospitalized after experiencing a stroke, his chief of staff Allison Herwitt said in a statement released Sunday.

“He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke. He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment,” she said in a statement.

“The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery.”

Murphy was first elected to the Senate in 2013 and has been viewed as a potential 2028 Democratic presidential primary candidate.

He has spent the past several weeks on the campaign trail with Democrats as he stumped to help retake control of the Senate majority in the midterm elections. He had been scheduled to campaign for Democrats in New Hampshire on Sunday.

Murphy is 53 years old, born August 3, 1973.
