CNN’s Abby Phillip said Monday that President Donald Trump has made himself Batman, as he fights crime in “Gotham City.”
“Donald Trump makes himself Batman, and the nation’s capital is Gotham City. The president of the United States has declared himself crimefighter-in-chief, and he’s taking over Washington’s police force,” Phillip said during her roundtable segment on CNN.
Trump announced Monday the federalization of the Metropolitan Police Department to address crime in Washington, D.C., giving him 30 days of federal control over the department before he needs congressional approval to extend that control.
Phillip also said Trump contradicted himself by calling Washington, D.C., a “hellhole.” She played footage of Trump’s speech on Monday, in which he said the capital has been “overtaken by violent gangs,” and compared it to a speech he made on May 7, in which he said street and violent crime was down “by 25%.”

Phillip is not the first person to compare Trump to Batman. In 2015, a child asked Trump, then-presidential candidate, if he was Batman. Trump, who was giving some children a ride on one of his helicopters, enthusiastically responded, “I am Batman,” drawing laughter from the adults onboard.

Trump’s interaction with the child prompted late-night host Jimmy Kimmel to take footage from Batman: The Animated Series and dub over it with various audio of Trump speaking.
The Washington Examiner reached out to CNN and Phillip for comment.
