We’re now a full year into the Biden-Harris administration and unfortunately for both of them, the hits just keep on coming.
As we reported Tuesday, Biden and Harris have performed so poorly in their first year in office that two key voting blocs that are crucial to both parties in an election year – independents and suburban voters – have signaled in pretty staggering numbers they are ready to move on from them both, and the Democratic party in general as well.
Even worse for Harris is that in a potential head-to-head match-up with former President Donald Trump – who she and Biden have both been painting as Public Enemy Number One, she fares worse than Joe Biden. Where the most recent poll shows Biden potentially losing to Trump by 6, it has Harris losing by ten, proving that she has little to show for the elevation of her profile on a national level over the past year.
In fact, her getting more time in the spotlight the last 12 months than she’s ever had in her political career has probably hurt her more than harmed her, and that’s saying a lot since the press has given her every opportunity to demonstrate she’s up to the task, opportunities that usually go south in a hurry right along with the assignments she’s given from Joe Biden, like being his point person on the “root causes” of the border crisis.
And now, as the failures continue to pile up, even more lame excuses are being dropped, excuses that conveniently are an attempt to make her look better by blaming her surroundings and the fact that she’s supposedly not a fan of the DC bubble:
Sitting among some of the most influential Black women in America last month, Vice President Kamala Harris confessed to a stifling sensation that had fallen over her while in office. She was struggling to escape the D.C. bubble, Harris confided to the group, which had gathered in person and virtually for the private audience, according to multiple attendees.
Harris has grumbled at times about the customs of a town where she remains a relative newcomer. She is prone to lament the Beltway’s obsession with familiarity, the routine groupthink of its thought leaders; and the intense interest in collecting scraps of palace intrigue, according to more than a dozen aides and people familiar with her conversations. She’s repeatedly instructed her aides to stay focused on the work. At the same time, she’s allowed that her instinct to ignore the superficial elements of politics has created more work for her team, which is forced to operate aggressively in that world.
My first thought when I read this was that “nope, nope, nope” gif we see a lot on Twitter.
In my opinion, Harris isn’t a fan of the DC bubble not because she doesn’t like bubbles, but because she can’t control this particular bubble. See, in California, let’s just say her … reputation preceded her anytime she walked into a room. She got up close and personal and connected with the key power players in the state and people knew that and would treat her for the power player she was.
She’s had similar opportunities in D.C. and then some, but though California is a large state D.C. is a much more crowded field with a lot of competition, a place where it’s harder to stand out. But despite the fact that Harris reportedly didn’t ensconce herself firmly in the D.C. bubble during her time in the Senate, she nevertheless got picked as Biden’s vice-presidential running mate — after woke strategists gave him little choice.
Joe Biden having the decades of experience he did in D.C. both as a Senator and then Vice President meant that the person he needed to pick as VP didn’t need to be a veteran of the D.C. cocktail circuit. He just needed someone to complement him, to be able to go out and sell the administration’s agenda as well as handle the tasks they’re given, like be a conduit between the United States and the Northern Triangle on the “root causes” of the border crisis.
She’s been able to do none of it with any degree of success, and the reason why is that she’s just not very good at what she does, and never really has been. Prior reports from people who used to work with her suggest a woman who leaves the important details of any assignment to staffers, while Kamala Harris herself goes before the cameras to bask in all the glory of her status and position and pretends like she knows what she’s talking about.
Then when she falls flat, she blames .. her staff. As the Washington Post reported in December:
Staffers who worked for Harris before she was vice president said one consistent problem was that Harris would refuse to wade into briefing materials prepared by staff members, then berate employees when she appeared unprepared.
“It’s clear that you’re not working with somebody who is willing to do the prep and the work,” one former staffer said. “With Kamala you have to put up with a constant amount of soul-destroying criticism and also her own lack of confidence. So you’re constantly sort of propping up a bully and it’s not really clear why.”
Unprepared, lacks authenticity, wants to take all the credit but none of the responsibility that goes along with it when the going gets tough, yep, that’s Kamala Harris. And nope, that has nothing to do whatsoever with whatever supposed problems she’s had navigating the D.C. bubble. She’s just a terrible politician. Period.
