Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) offered a lighthearted response after President-elect Donald Trump commented on her failure to clinch a powerful House committee position.

The progressive New Yorker recently opposed establishment Democrats when she challenged the older Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) for the top Democratic position on the influential House Oversight Committee.

After Ocasio-Cortez lost the coveted position to Connolly during a leadership vote on Tuesday, Trump said it was “really too bad that AOC lost the Battle for the Leadership Seat in the Democrat Party.”

“She should keep trying. Someday, she will be successful!” Trump added in a post to Truth Social on Wednesday evening.

Ocasio-Cortez promptly responded.

“Damn you know it’s bad when even Trump is feeling bad for me,” she said, adding a laughing emoji to her words.

Trump’s apparent show of support for the progressive lawmaker comes after Rep. James Comer (R-KY) expressed enthusiasm for Ocasio-Cortez leading up to the leadership vote earlier this week.

As the Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Comer responded to whether he would “like to co-chair” with Ocasio-Cortez.

Adding that he’s “a big AOC fan,” Comer said, “Obviously I don’t agree with very much of her policy, but I think she’s a good person.”

“I think she’s a good, well-spoken person for the Democrats to serve in that position,” he continued during a CNN interview last Thursday.
