The White House has condemned the military coup performed in Myanmar in a statement provided by Press Secretary Jen Psaki.

Part of the statement reads “We continue to affirm our strong support for Burma’s democratic institutions and, in coordination with our regional partners, urge the military and all other parties to adhere to democratic norms and the rule of law, and to release those detained today.”
It finished by saying “We are monitoring the situation closely and stand with the people of Burma, who have already endured so much in their quest for democracy and peace.”
Myanmar’s military has successfully committed a coup and have taken over the country, detaining elected politicians like Aung San Suu Kyi.
This coup comes after Suu Kyi’s party won by a landslide in an election last year. The military claims the election was subjected to voter fraud.
In a letter she wrote before being detained, she urged supporters to “not accept this” and “protest against the coup”. She also said that the actions by the military are making the country a dictatorship, reported BBC.
Myanmar, called “Burma” by the United States, was previously ruled by army forces until 2011 when reforms by Aung San Suu Kyi ended military rule.
